8 Ways to Show Your Employees You Appreciate Them

November 24th, 2017

It’s that time of the year for giving thanks – and it’s important to put your employees at the top of your list. While you should be grateful for your staff year-round, Thanksgiving provides an ideal opportunity to ramp up your efforts and show them just how much you appreciate their contributions.

And, as one of Oklahoma City’s top staffing agencies, 1st Staffing Group knows saying ‘thank you’ is more than just something nice to do. It can make a measurable impact on productivity and profits. Keep in mind, the way you treat your employees is often the way they will treat your customers.

To help you get started, here are eight ways to show your employees you appreciate them:

You’ve got to say it.

It’s human nature to want to be appreciated. And a simple ‘thank you’ for staying late, going the extra mile or taking on extra work is the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to show employees you care – and notice their contributions. So get into the habit of saying ‘thank you.’

You can write it too.

A handwritten note to an employee is another great way to say ‘thanks.’ Just be specific with your employee and include at least one comment about a key strength, behavior or task completed that you really appreciated…and why.

Give of your time.

Schedule a casual meeting with each employee to talk more about performance. But don’t simply talk about your goals and expectations.

Strive to get to know them better. Ask about their career hopes and dreams – and how you can help them achieve more. Find out how they think things are going on the job and what you can do to provide more support.

Host an employee appreciation day.

Once a month, host an employee appreciation day where you buy lunch for the team and highlight one or two employees who have made an especially big impact that month. Not only will you recognize a top performer, but you’ll also motivate others to work harder and improve their performance.

Offer growth opportunities.

Show your employees how much you trust and respect them by offering growth opportunities. By expanding access to opportunity, not only will you boost their abilities, but their loyalty as well. Whether you pay for an online course or offer a stretch assignment, you can enhance personal growth while also rewarding employees. It’s a win-win.

Surprise your staff with a treat.

You don’t have to break the bank to show employees you care. Bringing in bagels in the morning or hosting a mid-day donut break or ice cream social is a great way to build camaraderie and thank employees for their hard work.

Create a reward system.

Develop a system where every time an employee meets a goal or completes a project, they can earn points towards prizes, like free airfare or tickets to a sporting event.

Publicize top performers.

Send out an email to your entire staff recognizing certain employees for their excellent performance. You can promote their performance, too, in your company newsletter to customers.

Don’t assume your staff knows how much you appreciate and value them. It’s up to you to show it – and the eight ideas above are great ways to start!
