3 Weaknesses Employers Look for During Interviews

October 13th, 2017

One question you can almost always anticipate being asked during a job interview is “What is your greatest weakness?” Regardless of the company, position or field, employers like to gauge your level self-awareness, assess your personality and character, and see how well you respond under pressure. Although this question carries a lot of weight and may seem to force you to paint yourself in a negative light, answering honestly demonstrates a strong sense of self-awareness as well as a willingness to better yourself. Keeping this in mind, it is important to recognize three main weaknesses employers will look for during an interview:

  1. It is not unheard of for candidates to attempt naming a strength instead of a weakness, such as, “I am too hardworking” or “I am a perfectionist.” Avoid doing this. Not only does it not provide what your interviewer is asking, it also insults their intelligence.
  2. Vague or non-answers. Another strategy candidates sometimes try to utilize is being vague in their answer to this question. Neglecting to provide specific examples portrays you as unprepared, whereas simply denying any weaknesses makes you appear unaware of yourself or arrogant.
  3. Negative or irrelevant answers. Although employers are seeking self-aware and honest candidates, it is important to avoid throwing yourself on your sword. Do not bring up weaknesses that may reflect poorly on your character or attitude. With that said, it is important to make sure the examples you provide are relevant. Discussing weaknesses that have little or no bearing on the job will frustrate the hiring manager far more than an honest answer.
