What Should I Wear to a Job Interview?

April 28th, 2017

So, you’ve landed yourself a job interview – congratulations! The skills highlighted on your resume and the initial phone-screening process have proven to the hiring manager you are a qualified candidate for the position. While you’re preparing your answers for potential questions and coming up with questions of your own to ask during your interview, it’s also important to plan your interview outfit. First impressions are long lasting and you want to make this a positive one! While the exact style of clothing you should wear will vary depending on the type of job and company, some standard interview attire guidelines include:

  • Dress one or two levels up. Even if the job you are interviewing for won’t necessarily require professional or business attire day to day, dressing a level or two up for your interview conveys respect and shows you are taking both the interview and potential opportunity seriously.
  • Think conservatively. Make sure your clothes are ironed and hair is clean and neatly styled. Interviews are not the place for perfumes or colognes. Keep your makeup natural and minimal and avoid excessive jewelry such as dangly earrings or bracelets.
  • Use your best judgment. Times have changed, and while suits were once a must for all interviews, this is no longer the case. Consider the culture of the company where you are interviewing as well as the weather and climate. Also, don’t be afraid to ask about the dress code when scheduling your interview!
  • Be true to yourself. While you want to present yourself in the most respectful and professional light possible, you don’t need to lose your entire personality in the process – after all, your personality is what makes you memorable! Consider wearing a colored blazer or jacket with your outfit or tastefully accessorizing with cufflinks or statement necklace.

It is no secret preparing for interviews can be nerve racking. Taking the time to plan each detail in advance, from prospective questions to choosing your outfit, can greatly alleviate pre-interview jitters. 1st Staffing Group prides itself on helping job seekers throughout Texas put their best face forward to land top jobs in Odessa, TX.
