Better Late Than Never! – Why You Need to Update Your Resume

July 8th, 2016

Many of us are guilty of doing it. Unless you are actively job seeking, it is easy to let your resume take the back burner for several months or even years until you’re back on the job market again. It may sound surprising, but having an up-to-date and polished resume can be as valuable to you now as it is in the midst of a job search. If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your resume, consider these top reasons you need to update your resume as soon as possible:

  1. Picking up side work. You may not be looking for a new full-time venture, but picking up some freelance work or collaborating on a side project could be a great addition to your professional portfolio. Having an up-to-date resume will allow you to take advantage of great opportunities like these when they become available.
  2. Extracurricular credentials. Have you ever wanted to speak at a conference, contribute to an article, or speak in any other media form as an expert? Having an up-to-date resume on hand provides on-the-spot credentials for opening these doors.
  3. Understanding your skill set. Having your experience and skills in front of you visually can provide invaluable insight into your own professional development. Reviewing where you started and what you have done can help you recognize your strengths, identify areas for development, and recognize patterns.
  4. Worst-case scenario preparation. Unfortunately, layoffs and position cuts happen from time to time, even if you are great at your job. An up-to–date resume can help you be prepared for the worst.
  5. Best-case scenario preparation. Just as layoffs and position cuts can seemingly happen out of the blue, so can unexpected promotions! While your direct supervisor will likely have firsthand knowledge of your work ethic and skill set, you’ll still need to have an up-to-date resume to present to be considered for any promotion.

Although resume preparation is something many of us forget about after finding a job, maintaining an up-to-date resume does not need to be a daunting task. Simply carving out a few minutes of time each day to update your experience and skills, then setting a reminder to polish your resume every so often can make a huge difference – as well as take a huge weight off your shoulders – in the event that certain situations arise.
