6 Things to Do When You Start a New Job

June 3rd, 2016

Starting a new job is both an exciting and nerve-racking time in any professional’s life. The hardest part in job seeking is over – you’ve landed a great new job! However, with any new situation comes a sense of uneasiness. At 1st Staffing Group, we understand the need to make a great first impression on your new colleagues while simultaneously learning the nuances of your new work environment. If you’re about to begin a new job, follow these six simple pieces of advice to make sure your first week on the job is a great one!

  1. Introduce yourself. Don’t be shy about introducing yourself to your new co-workers! This will help you make a great first impression while you learn who you’ll be working with on different projects or call for help when necessary.
  2. Set goals. Starting a new job is the perfect time to set goals and pave the way for positive habits. Meet with your boss to discuss expectations and get organized.
  3. Speak up. No one expects you to know the ins and outs of your new working environment, so if you have a question about something, don’t be afraid to ask! Additionally, don’t hold back when it comes to volunteering to take on new tasks or ask how you can be of the most help to the team. This will position you in front of your peers as well as management!
  4. Arrive early. While you’re getting acclimated to your new job, your new colleagues and supervisors will be learning about your habits! Plan to arrive to work 5 – 10 minutes early to show you are a diligent worker, and to help you get to know your new working space and people.
  5. Be patient. Many new hires are excited to hit the ground running when starting a new job. Because of this, it can be easy to become frustrated while learning new processes and systems or being dependent on others throughout your training. Be patient with yourself throughout this period and remind yourself that it is only a temporary transition!
  6. Communicate with your staffing agency. Staffing firms take pride in their job placements and want to be sure their candidates have found the right fit! Let your staffing rep know how things are going and provide feedback where applicable.

The first few weeks (or months!) on the job are the perfect time to hone your skills, absorb new knowledge, and connect with your new co-workers. Following the tips above can help you make the most of this time while you adjust to your new work environment.
