Smart Ways of Finding a Job After College (Including Temping)

December 14th, 2015

College can be great fun, but it’s also four years of hard work in preparation for a career. You’ve learned a great deal, and now it’s time to put that knowledge to use. Here are some smart ways to find the right job once you’ve graduated from college:

  1. Be open to opportunities. Temp positions? Internships? Freelancing? Sure! When you’re starting your career, don’t be afraid to try everything. You’re in a great place to experiment and learn all you can about the kind of workplace that supports your best work and the kind that undercuts it. Temporary positions, internships, and freelancing all let you take an employer for a “trial run” before deciding whether this is the team for you – and if it’s not, you’ll learn more about what will be the place for you to thrive.
  2. Start looking early. Most college students don’t even start thinking about searching for a job until their senior year – if then. But just as you started looking at colleges during your junior year of high school, start looking for jobs your junior year of college. The more time you give yourself, the more information you can gather, putting you in a great position to choose the right employer for you once you have your degree in hand.
  3. Tap into your professors’ networks. Your professors do more than teach. They also have connections in industries related to their subject area, and many of them actually work in these industries in addition to teaching college classes. Ask your professors if they have any contacts with employers that interest you. They may be able to get you a personal recommendation you wouldn’t have achieved otherwise.
  4. Work with a recruiter. Staffing firms don’t just work with experienced professionals. The right firm for you will also place new college graduates with companies that offer the right cultural fit for your personality and approach, giving you an environment that supports your work style so you can focus on gaining skills and climbing the career ladder.
