What Does Your Online “Professional” Brand Say About You?

November 30th, 2015

Companies aren’t the only ones who focus on branding. Smart job candidates also realize that the best way to communicate their value to potential employers is to build an employment “brand” of their own.

The Web offers myriad opportunities for building your brand. From social media sites like LinkedIn to platforms for online portfolios, video, images and more, the Internet gives you the chance to build a strong professional brand that shows employers the best of what you have to offer.

What does your online “brand” currently say about you – and how can you make it say the best? Keep these tips in mind:

  • Take an outsider’s perspective. Put your name through several popular search engines and examine the first two pages of results. Do they present you as a strong professional in your field? If not, contact the administrator at each website and ask for the information to be taken down.
  • Mind your privacy. Each social media site has privacy settings you can use to control who sees much of the information you post there. Use these to limit your past postings or even to delete them if they do not present you in a professional light. However, remember that even the strongest privacy settings cannot control all information posted to social media – for instance, photos posted to Facebook as “private” may still be indexed by Google Image Search and appear publicly there. If you don’t want an employer to find it, don’t post it!
  • Build your brand proactively. Upload some of your best work to your LinkedIn profile, start a blog, join professional forums or Listserv™ related to your work, and contribute thoughtful, professional comments and assistance to others. The more you build your professional brand proactively, the sooner these results will take over older postings in search engine results for your name – establishing your online professional brand as one that prospective employers should take seriously.
