Unadvertised Job Opportunities: How to Find (and Get!) Them

February 20th, 2015

If you’ve been looking for a job lately and going through either the want-ads or career websites, you’ll undoubtedly find plenty of jobs listed. But, what about unadvertised job opportunities? There are a wealth of these out there, and with the right strategy, you’ll be able to find and land the job of your dreams.

So, if an opportunity isn’t advertised, how on earth are you supposed to find out about it? The answer to that question is very simple: you need to find a recruiter. Quite often, high level companies don’t like to publicize their job openings and they rely on recruiters to help them find the talent they need – and do it quietly.

If you have never worked with a recruiter before, you might be surprised at just how beneficial this relationship can be. Here are a few pointers to get you started.

  1. Look for a recruiting agency in your community. For example, if you live in Odessa, your first step would be to locate employment staffing firms in your area and then a little beyond. Unless you’re willing to relocate, it’s in your best interests to stick with a firm that is close to home.
  2. Set up a meeting with a recruiter. During this meeting, you’ll be learning more about what the recruiter does and they’ll need to learn about you as well. For example, they’ll need to know about your schooling, your skills, the type of job you are looking for and your expectations. Remember, be completely honest with them! You’ll need to bring along a current resume or CV to your meeting.
  3. Learn about the application process. Most recruiters offer at least some level of coaching for their applicants and it is a good idea to take advantage of this training. They’ll be able to teach you more about presenting yourself during interviews and how to make a great (and lasting!) impression.

Working with a recruiter can be beneficial in many different ways. Not only can they help you find those unadvertised jobs, they can also assist you with finding temporary positions that could go long-term, or even assist you in finding the right career path if you are still uncertain about where you want your future to go.

Take the step to set up your first interview with a local recruiter – chances are you’ll be surprised at just how much you have to gain! Looking for a job in Oklahoma City area? Contact our recruiting team today to discover unadvertised jobs!
